Program Head of Down East DIY (Do-It-Yourself)

Join us on stunning Mount Desert Island (Bar Harbor)! We are a premier outdoor education

day camp with 50 acres of woods bordering Acadia National Park and significant waterfront

on Echo Lake. Camp Beech Cliff is seeking qualified applicants for the Program Head of

Down East DIY position to make this program area engaging and popular! This instructor

plans creative and hands-on activities to help every camper experience what it means to be

self-reliant and somewhat self-sustainable. Think: primitive skills meet arts and crafts. From

working with our garden and clock of chickens, to textile work, to woodworking, to old-
fashioned foodstuffs, the possibilities are endless! All staff must adhere to the health and

safety laws set forth by the State of Maine Dept of Human Services Youth Camps Division,

and standards for accreditation with the American Camping Association.

Considerations: Applicants should realize that the job of a camp counselor is challenging,

demanding, and requires a great deal of patience and understanding. Personal lifestyle

sacrifices may have to be made including disconnecting from daily use of digital technology

during the camp day. Sensitive and dynamic leadership is necessary to provide youngsters

the opportunity to grow, learn to positively relate to others, establish life-long values, and

increase their appreciation of the natural world. Salary depends on level of experience and

relevant certifications ($450 – $550 per week). Possible housing available.

Minimum qualifications: At least 20 years of age, and one year’s experience leading basic

handcraft activities with kids Including: wood working, textiles, primitive crafts, etc. Must

enjoy working with youth of all backgrounds, and be passionate about working outdoors

and engaging campers ages 6 – 15. Must have the ability to plan a wide range of activities

and programs throughout the summer. Availability Mid-June through end of August.

Preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years of direct experience in

leading handcraft activities for kids. If no degree, equivalent work or study experience

preferred.
