Background:
Olympia is a small town of 55,000 in a county of roughly 380,000 people. We have over 45 referring practices within 30 miles of the hospital. Olympia is a beautiful city located at the southernmost tip of the Puget Sound. The Pacific Ocean is 45 minutes away, Mt Rainier is a hours and half away, and the Olympia National Park is 1 hour away. Cost of living is much less than found in Seattle, Tacoma, or Portland, Oregon, which are an easy car trip from Olympia.
Olympia Veterinary Specialists is a private practice specialty center. In 2010 we started solely as an animal cancer center and in 2014 we became the Olympia Veterinary Specialists. In the fall of 2016, we opened our 24/7 emergency service hospital. Olympia Veterinary Specialist currently has multiple specialty practices under the company umbrella (Oncology, Surgery, Internal medicine, Emergency, and Cardiology). However, in the next 2 years most of these will be brought together into one practice. We have over 65 employees within the various practices and as administrative staff.
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications but starts at the low end around $70,000 per year. Benefits include moving bonus, medical insurance, three-week vacation, and one CE trip per year.
Qualifications desired:
- A college degree is not necessarily required, but a bachelor’s degree or at least a background in business management is an advantage.
- Practice manager certification via CVPM
- It is desired that the candidate has had continuing education courses in the last three years covering such things as HR, hospital culture, generationally changing workplace, and technology. Will think outside the box to keep practice as diverse as possible.
- At least two to three years working experience in a veterinary practice as an CVT/LVT or higher is desired but not required.
- Experience in specialty practice is much preferred but not required.
- Must have adequate experience to ensure that the clinic team has the required schedules, training, equipment, and support to provide quality care while generating adequate revenues to remain profitable.
Job description for position:
- Working to set up management structure from technician manager to hospital board and medical director. Ability to delegate and provide training for succession and coverage within management and staffing.
- Communication with staff and doctors to provide a healthy and innovative practice culture. Oversight of staff mental health and health issues.
- Working with HR contracted firm to ensure all things HR are covered for employees.
- Comfort with computers and new technologies used in veterinary hospitals
- Comfort with financial reporting, including accounts receivable, income reconciliation, credit, accounts payable, inventory, budgeting, and setting fees. Patient medical records oversight and management
- Comfort with client service, including client communication, education, interaction, grief protocol, patient comfort, and staff education
- Ensuring community involvement and marketing of hospital, including participation in fundraising and charity events and advertising.
Skills & Competencies desired:
- Organization skills: ability to work at 20,000 feet while working with ground level employees or middle management and HR. Ability to work and think strategically with understanding of strategic management of a business and work/communicate with a partnership.
- Leadership skills: must be able to motivate employees while monitoring hospital culture. Have skills that when needed can improve culture through innovative and creative ways. Understanding that a practice managers job is to ensure a positive teamwork-oriented culture so the entire staff can focus on helping animals and their families.
- Communication and interpersonal skills: adequate or better verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others and outside veterinary clinics and the community.
