Job Description
Title: DIRECTOR
Status: Exempt
Reports to: Board of Trustees
Salary: Based on experience and education
POSITION SUMMARY
The Library Director is responsible for providing a vision for the Library and staff in accordance with the library’s Mission Statement. Oversees day to day operations of the library. Conducts long-range planning and budgeting. Creates, implements, and evaluates programs and services. Manages personnel including training, development, supervision, and performance evaluation.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Provide vision for the Library and the staff in accordance with the Library’s Mission Statement.
- Plan and direct a balanced program of library service to all residents of Marshall County.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of library service in relation to the changing needs of the community.
- Formulate and recommend to the MCPL Board of Trustees new policies and changes in existing policies.
- Implement and monitor present and future policies approved by the Board of Trustees.
- Initiate planning for current and future activities.
- Oversee day to day operation of the Library.
- Maintain awareness of trends in the field and develop programs so that MCPL takes advantage of new services and products to provide enhanced services.
- Oversee physical facilities and recommend new construction, coordinate site selection, design and construction of new buildings.
- Oversee preparation of the annual budget.
- Approve all Library expenditures.
- Monitor monthly budget expenditures.
- Report monthly to the Board of Trustees on the operation of the library system and keep
- Trustees informed regarding the Library’s program of service.
- Oversee the library’s technology and its development.
- Oversee human resource management including recruitment, employment, compensation, and performance development; exercise administrative direction over all library staff either directly or through subordinate supervisors; provide leadership in establishing effective working relationships and communication, ensuring high productivity, and encouraging initiative and professional growth.
- Determine the management structure of the organization and evaluate the performance of managers.
- Review performance evaluations of staff members as appropriate.
- Administer, with staff, an effective public relations program.
- Serve as a key spokesperson for the Library or designate staff members to do so as necessary.
- Oversee a public relations program to ensure community awareness of library services and to provide positive local, regional, state, and national recognition of the library.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, civic and community groups and the general public.
- Represent the Library system to a larger library professional community including active involvement in appropriate local, state and national associations.
- Address public complaints that cannot be resolved at a lower level *
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

- Management experience required.
- Must obtain Professional Certification from the Kentucky State Board for the Certification of Librarians within three (3) years of hire date. *

- Proficiency with Windows-based PC’s, Microsoft Office products, Web searching, email, and related products and procedures
- Valid driver’s license *
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
*
- Light to medium work [lifting, pushing or pulling 20-50 lb. maximum]
- Movement throughout the facility locating/retrieving materials and assisting users
- Reaching, bending, kneeling and crouching to retrieve and replace library materials, supplies, and files
- Handling and manipulating library materials; fingering pages, cards, forms, etc.
- Operating computer and audiovisual equipment
- Visual acuity sufficient to identify materials on shelving up to 90 inches in height and to read primarily typed or printed text in a variety of type sizes**
NOTE*:
Any variance in requirements would be made by the library’s Board of Trustees and only with unanimous approval.
