Position Overview:

The IT Department manages the primary product of the brand – the publishing of data on millions of businesses – and develops new IT products and services for the membership to assist with the presentation and delivery of that data to BBB’s stakeholders.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) will be responsible for keeping the organization future-focused and clear about leveraging, institutionalizing, and continuously improving its core capabilities, thus ensuring the BBB brand and IABBB maintain long-term innovation and operations at a high level.

The role of the CTO is to sustain organizational focus on innovation in order to support profitable growth and avoid over-reliance on existing technology. The CTO assumes responsibility for leading the development of new, profitable growth platforms that leverage opportunities emerging from the intersection of demographic and environmental trends, organization capabilities, and unmet customer needs.

The CTO is responsible for matching technology with business priorities, and works with partners who supply solutions for the organization’s technology needs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with Executive Management to grow the BBB brand through the use of technological resources.
  • Using an active and practical approach, the CTO will direct all employees supporting Operations to attain the organization’s strategic goals established in its strategic plan.
  • Function collaboratively with colleagues across multi-disciplinary teams capable of delivering on integrated projects. Maintain continuous and open communication between member BBBs and service and support teams.
  • Identify and implement various technology solutions within the organization and maintain and ensure high availability of the existing BBB brand-wide infrastructure and systems
  • In partnership with the CEO and department heads, identify opportunities and risks for delivering technology services, including identification of competitive services, opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to the mission and success of the brand.
  • Establish the BBB brand’s technical vision and leads all aspects of the organization’s technological development
  • At the direction of the board and CEO, contribute to strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritizing development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of services
  • Works in a consultative fashion with other department heads as an advisor of technologies that may improve their efficiency and effectiveness Conduct research and case studies on leading edge technologies and make determinations on the probability of implementation
  • Establish a governance process that meets government, partner, brand, and legal expectations for customer information privacy
  • Ensure compliance with government regulations that apply to systems operations
  • Ensure that IT and network infrastructure adequately support the organization’s computing, data processing, and communications needs
  • Develop and manage the IT budget

Qualifications

Experience & Education

BS in related field and at least 15 years’ experience in the Information Technology or Engineering arena, at least 10 years management and strategic experience in this field or MBA/MS in related filed with 10 years’ experience, 7 of which must be managerial and strategic

  • 5+ years demonstrated relevant experience in enterprise architecture and systems/solutions architecture and design
  • Relevant technical certification
  • Executive level leadership experience required
  • Proven experience in contract negotiation and vendor management
  • Not-for-profit work experience preferred

Specific Skills:

  • Excellent ability to conceptualize long-term business goals and develop orderly processes to accomplish those goals
  • Ability to actively communicate, inspire, and motivate all levels of staff
  • Ability to think and act strategically and proactively
  • Ability to demonstrate through past experiences an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Non-Profit accounting experience
  • Remote workforce experience
