PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: Under minimal supervision, plans, administers, and directs intercollegiate athletic programs for men and women. Schedules and contracts for athletic events; oversees employment and direction of athletic coaches; directs publicity, ticket sales, and fundraising; manages equipment and facilities. Ensures overall program compliance with NCAA and SIAC requirements.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Directs activities of an intercollegiate athletics organization including all men’s and women’s sports programs

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Directs activities of an intercollegiate athletics organization including all men’s and women’s sports programs.
  • Plans and develops strategies for generating revenues and resources for the University’s athletics department while promoting public support for student athletes.
  • Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates operational effectiveness; effects changes required for improvement.
  • Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization.
  • Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives; recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates unit staff.
  • Oversees and directs facilities usage of all athletic buildings and equipment.
  • Represents the University to various institutional divisions as well as externally to the media, prospective student-athletes and their parents, prospective funding agencies and private donors, national athletic regulatory and governance bodies, university alumni, and the general public.
  • Articulates philosophy and vision for the future of intercollegiate athletics while providing student-athletes with a sense of pride and leadership.
  • Recommends and participates in the development of University policies and procedures; may serve on university planning and policy-making committees.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing intercollegiate athletics.
  • Knowledge of facilities and asset management procedures.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Knowledge of faculty and/or staff hiring procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Knowledge of public relations principles and practices.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
  • Knowledge of management principles and practices.
  • Ability to identify and secure alternative funding/revenue sources.
  • Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position does have supervisory responsibilities

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree; at least 10 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Master’s degree is preferred. Significant successful experience in the administration of intercollegiate athletics or comparable managerial experience is preferred
