    GENERAL MANAGER / COO

    Timber Manufacturing DFW Area

    Company is experiencing outstanding growth in its market niche. Mill produces a full line of timbers and surfaced products serving the retail lumber market in Texas and adjacent states. Company is strong financially with a long history of quality service.

    Responsibilities:

    • Overseeing day-to-day operations of the company including
    • Supervision of operations manager and all production activities
    • Oversee operations manager in daily logistics operation to achieve best delivery times and cost efficiencies
    • Monitor and alter manufacturing operations to achieve highest possible level of quality control to maximize customer satisfaction and minimize returns
    • Production planning and coordination of plant activities to achieve manufacturing objectives in a timely and cost effective manner
    • Manage raw material purchasing and inventory levels
    • Plan and oversee maintenance of existing mill plant facilities and equipment, making replacements, or modifications when necessary
    • Direct inside and outside sales personnel and advertising and marketing programs
    • Provide direction, development training and leadership to managers, supervisors and plant personnel to accomplish the company goals and objectives.
    • Set comprehensive goals for performance and growth
    • Manage budget and production operations with ability to handle full P & L responsibilities
    • Continually improve company policies, practices and training for employee safety
    • Evaluate subordinates, providing constructive feedback
    • Manage relationships with partners/vendors

    Experience & Qualifications

    • Proven experience as Chief Operating Officer or relevant role
    • Wood mill or factory management experience with demonstrated history of ethical leadership and reputation in the industry
    • Outstanding verbal and written skills, and experience working with staff on all levels
    • Ability to read and write the English language; prefer some Spanish language tools
    • Experience in use of integrated operations software
    • Computer proficiency with experience with Microsoft Office tools
    • Ability to work emergency nights, weekends, or time as needed and perform additional duties as required

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR DUTIES OF GENERAL MANAGER / COO

    TIMBER, REMAN OPERATION – DALLAS, TEXAS

    Personnel

    • Owner (74) has financial background, owned numerous prior businesses, is CEO, will remain active on administrative, financial matters—wants to pass operational involvement with operational decision making going to General Manager. Owner also CEO of adjacent wholesale truss plant.
    • General Manager would have authority over all personnel and be responsible for decisions on personnel additions, changes.
    • Present Operations Manager handles all logistics, production scheduling, material selection for production, directs mill foreman, is onsite operations manager, no involvement with sales, defers operational strategy to CEO. Eleven years’ experience, started as yard stacker. Heavily involved in outside church work, not interested in overtime or weekend work. Needs experienced General Manager for guidance.
    • Mill foreman works directly with floor workers (3-4 forklift operators, 8 machine operators, 5-6 stackers). Young, hard worker, easy to get along with, needs experienced upper level support.
    • Three outside salesmen, two inside sales persons; need more structured sales management.
    • All accounting, financial and HR matters handled at corporate office

    Equipment

    • Candidate needs to have experience in mill with older machines—we have no computer programmed equipment
    • Prefer someone who has worked on machinery in their career as well as purchased replacement equipment—we need to start a plant equipment upgrade.
    • Oversee preventive maintenance program and provide guidance to maintenance personnel through prior experiences.
    • No dedicated maintenance persons; machine maintenance, saw filing done by selected production personnel in addition to production jobs.

    Manufacturing

    • Want to expand our reman operations. GM will need to have experience working with inventory managers at lumber yards, fence material retailers, other wood users to negotiate reman contracts, balance production with customer orders.
    • Expand and monitor safety and training programs.
    • Recommend layout, procedural changes to achieve more efficient production
    • Develop strong working relationship with sister truss plant located next to timber facility to take advantage of synergistic opportunities
    • About to build facility in central Texas for sales office, distribution center, material storage, some manufacturing. Outside salesman for Houston, Central and South Texas will office there, manage territory.

    Purchasing

    • Prefer that all wood purchases be made or overseen by GM—now done by two of our three outside salesmen.
    • Virtually all of our wood purchases are Douglass Fir or Cedar; suppliers are in Oregon and Canada with some through local branches of national wholesalers
