Position Summary

We are currently looking for a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead the strategy for advanced technology development and integration into products and programs for our Electro-Optical Infrared Sensors and Systems (EOIS) division. The EOIS division is growing at a rapid pace with a healthy base of programs across the armed services. The heart of our systems is our technology. Leonardo DRS’ has a legacy of innovation anchored by our world leading Infrared sensors. We are looking for a dynamic, creative, “Hands On”, leader who will add to our legacy of innovation by leading the development of our technology strategy and directing the overall product development activities of the company’s advanced technologies. The CTO will report directly to the Vice President and General Manager of the EOIS division.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, manage, and direct the overall product development activities of the company’s Advanced Technologies and Programs in a diverse array of areas including but not limited to: Cooled and Uncooled detectors, Camera Cores and EO Ground, Aviation, Soldier, and Space Systems.
  • Work with Business Development to pursue and capture Advanced Development (6.3 and early 6.4) sensor and system program funding. Including leading the preparation of proposals for advanced technologies and programs.
  • Ensure that “technology to win” as a key discriminator is both understood with respect to current and future customers/CONOPs and is available for strategic captures and market penetration campaigns.
  • Assists the company’s business leaders in development and execution of the Strategic Plan
    • Lead development of long-range technology roadmaps, and associated advanced technology development planning, to ensure best use of company resources and discretionary funds in accordance with objectives for growth and profitability
    • Coordinate the planning and product road mapping of established programs ensuring alignment to Strategic Plan objectives and technology roadmaps
    • Recommend technical and product strategies for lines of business within the organization supporting the short and/or long range strategic objectives of the company
    • Assist in reviewing proposals and strategies for existing Production, ECP, and EMD POR programs for alignment to advanced technology and strategic plan.
  • Assist in investigating and assessing outside opportunities for the company, including possible acquisitions, joint ventures, mergers, technology licensing, small business innovative research (SBIR) partnering and teaming;
  • Identify and lead cross-business and cross-corporation technology and product development synergies and collaboration opportunities.
  • Advise appropriate personnel of the latest technical and engineering developments
  • Manage budget, cost and schedule input for design, development, integration, and testing of advanced technologies
  • Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and customers
  • Direct the work of others, as assigned
  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
  • All other related duties as assigned.

Secondary Accountabilities

Basic Qualifications and Required Skills

  • 10+ years’ experience and a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related technical field required; Advanced Degree in Engineering or related technical field degree desired
  • Demonstrated “Hands On” experience in designing EO systems and leading/managing development programs.
  • Knowledgeable in current and emerging technologies across the markets in which the company competes
  • Must be open minded, creative, success oriented, capable of “big picture” thinking, not constrained by convention and extremely self-motivated to pursue and achieve goals
  • Knowledgeable in business development with experience developing competitive new business strategies.
  • Well-developed skills in the area of planning, organizing and negotiation
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in project based environment
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Solid leadership and management skills, particularly “influence management” and “conflict resolution”
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have the ability to travel 25%-50% of the time
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance
