What you will be doing

The Vice President, Strategy & Corporate Development will partner and collaborate with Leadership within AmerisourceBergen’s Community & Specialty Pharmacy (CSP), Health Systems and/or Specialty Physician Services (SPS) business segments and the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) to define longer-term strategic priorities and support execution of the strategy through leadership of key strategic projects/initiatives and by supporting the business leaders and Corporate Development function in sourcing, evaluating, and closing acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and other corporate development activities. Will have significant business development, corporate strategy, P&L management, and/or healthcare leadership experience and a proven ability to strategically assess and capitalize upon market conditions and trends, including both domestic and international opportunities.

He/she will have a demonstrated ability to foster a collaborative and partnership-based approach to achieve ABCs business goals, with both internal business partners as well as with external companies & constituents.

Your responsibilities …
  • Responsible for driving annual strategic planning process in partnership with Lead Team for assigned business segment and in partnership with CSO and VP of Corporate Strategy & Planning. Be a thought partner and drive discussions with business leaders in the development of strategic business plans and initiatives, including external landscape reviews, scenario analysis, and decision support.
  • Lead key strategic initiatives/ projects in support of the strategic plan and/or prioritized with the Lead Team.
  • Responsible for analyzing the universe of prospective companies in both the US and outside the US in order to identify potential acquisition and partnership transactions through industry-wide networking as aligned to the Business Segment’s strategic plan/Innovation agenda.
  • Accountable for driving new corporate development opportunities in core strategic areas. This includes maintaining a “pipeline” of attractive targets; evaluation specific opportunities (the initial strategic, business, operational review); partnering with Corporate Development function as deal moves to LOI phase; acting as project leader in moving deal through evaluation phase and handing off that leadership to Corporate Development as move into negotiation and due diligence phase.
  • In alignment with the strategic plan, informs the enterprise-wide portfolio of innovation and growth initiatives by maintaining a robust portfolio at the business segment level which he/she periodically reviews and refines with segment leadership to ensure high priority initiatives stay on track and deliver against objectives.
  • Maintains industry-wide perspective on major trends, including macro-economic, customer, regulatory, technology, distribution channel, product and competitive trends; identifies implications for AmerisourceBergen.
  • Follows competitive analysis and benchmarking to understand key areas of opportunity and development.
  • Effectively represents AmerisourceBergen Corporation to external constituents including acquisition targets and investment bankers.
  • Support definition of the innovation agenda and management of the innovation portfolio to see initiatives from ideation to prototyping to organizational diffusion and adoption.
  • Complies with all appropriate policies, procedures, safety rules and regulations.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 30% of the time.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
What your background should look like (minimum qualifications)

Requires Bachelor’s Degree; MBA preferred. Normally requires a minimum of ten (10+) years directly related and progressively responsible experience in one of the following industries of healthcare distribution, pharmaceuticals, medical devices/technologies, life sciences, or other related field, management consulting, private equity/venture capital, or investment banking.

  • Strong strategic thinker with proven financial modeling, decision support, and tactical execution capabilities
  • Extensive financial expertise; working knowledge of merger and acquisition activities including financial evaluations, due diligence, negotiations and closings
  • Ability to address the complex interrelationships among factors that influence the solutions to business issues in order to articulate key business strategies
  • Knowledge of healthcare industry
  • Demonstrates strong critical thinking and expresses ideas clearly, concisely and logically
  • Ability to make balanced and insightful decisions
