We are looking for a Vice President to lead the Government and Regulatory Affairs team within our Legal division. Your job will be to lead athenahealth’s advocacy strategy, as well as the company’s regulatory positions with stakeholders in federal and state legislatures and government agencies. The VP will help chart the direction for a growing health IT company operating in a complex regulatory environment. But enough about us; let’s talk about you.

You are an experienced Government Affairs professional with exemplary communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external groups. You have experience working with agencies within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, specifically ONC and CMS. You are based in (or you are willing to relocate to) the Boston area, but are comfortable with regular travel to Washington, D.C..

The Team: Our Government and Regulatory Affairs team monitors the policy landscape as it relates to healthcare, and considers changes that may impact our business. This team continues to build and maintain relationships on both sides of the aisle with advisory groups in Washington, DC. The team also educates our employee base about external policy issues and advises our leaders on interpretation of existing and upcoming law changes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Establishing and cultivating relationships with Members of Congress, federal agency officials, and state legislators and officials
  • Lead a team of internal and external lobbyists to execute on athenahealth’s policy priorities.
  • Working with third party advocacy organizations and associations to promote the company’s policy priorities
  • Assisting with company strategy as impacted by regulatory requirements
  • Develop briefing memos, policy statements, white papers, and other communications to educate legislators and staff members about the company’s positions on key issues
  • 2-5 days of travel per month, mainly to Washington, D.C.

Typical Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in government affairs with direct and continuous management of relationships with legislators, staffers, and federal agency officials.
  • 6+ years of regulatory experience
  • Well-developed network including federal and state legislators and government officials, and demonstrated effective advocacy leveraging this network
  • Experience working with relevant agencies in HHS, specifically CMS and ONC.
  • Regulatory, especially health industry, experience, with a strong record of conducting small and large scale research projects, analyzing regulatory frameworks and recommending practical solutions and approaches to meet business needs
  • Experience managing other employees
