Smiths Medical is seeking to appoint a Corporate Controller to play a key role in the leadership and development of the global finance function as this business gets spun out from Smiths Group as a separate listed company. He/she will lead the delivery of timely, accurate and insightful reporting of monthly business results to the Executive Committee and the Board, and will work closely with the Finance Leadership Team to ensure that the business performance is communicated clearly to all stakeholders. This person will also support the development of the business plans through an effective planning process covering business performance and the efficient allocation of capital.
The Group Financial Controller will lead and develop effective and robust internal financial control processes that safeguard all financial assets. He/she will identify potential financial liabilities and risks and maintain the reliability of all financial reporting, including Group statutory reporting. The Group Financial Controller will ensure the provision of all financial transaction processes, while managing key financial risks in the business.
In addition, the Group Financial Controller will be responsible for the FP&A function. This will require a detailed understanding of the business which will be gained through regular interaction with the management team. This individual should also expect to be involved in other ad hoc projects, including M&A and other aspects of Group policy.
Smiths Medical will be a UK-listed corporation with operational headquarters in Minneapolis, MN. This position will be based in Dublin, Ohio and report to the Chief Financial Officer.
POSITION SUMMARY
Overall responsibility for financial control and planning, reporting, accounting, and processing in support of the Chief Financial Officer in the effective financial management of the corporation.
Implement best practice and continual improvement across the financial management of the corporation. Drive a performance culture with thorough operational focus.
As a member of the senior management team contribute to the leadership and strategic development of the business and ensure the realization of significant value creation.
- Establish credibility with the Chief Executive, Chief Financial Officer and Chair of Audit Committee, and develop strong working relationships with the auditors and finance team.
- As a senior member of the finance function, contribute to the leadership and strategic development of the business.
- Work as part of the Smiths Group finance team to lead all aspects of financial control and financial compliance for the company. This will include responsibility for:
- timely and meaningful monthly management reporting;
- cash-flow maximization;
- all aspects of financial reporting, production of financial statements and the annual report;
- implementing and overseeing the companyâs financial compliance arrangements;
- ensuring smooth and timely completion of external and internal audits resolving all audit issues;
- Risk Register review; and
- managing the companyâs finance systems.
- Continuously improve financial control and planning processes to deliver a best-in-class function with a robust focus on cash generation and cost control.
- Help drive the budgeting process ensuring that the approved budget is effectively used as the yardstick for measuring business performance.
- Support operational and strategic decision-making processes through the provision of a financial perspective, developed through the interpretation and meaningful analysis of financial data.
- Ensure effective internal controls are in place; implement and enforce compliance with policies and procedures.
- Identify financial and business risks and ensure necessary steps are taken to mitigate these risks.
- Supervise the accounting and finance team, ensure it is geared towards providing the necessary support; actively mentor and develop the team members.
- Provide leadership and talent management to the finance function.
- Act as a substitute for Group Chief Financial Officer in dealing with both equity and debt investors.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance. Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
- Candidates should have a recognized accounting qualification (CPA or ACA)
- 15+ years relevant experience, including experience working for a Big 4 accounting firm, including managing projects, audit processes, providing technical advice and reporting to audit committees.
- Familiarity with IFRS and UK corporate filing requirements is strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of managerial experience with a proven track record of attracting, developing and retaining a high-performing team
- Expertise in Oracle or similar ERP system, Hyperion and Microsoft Office.
- Senior finance experience in a significant public company, ideally with a combination of commercial finance and group experience, with some exposure to tax, treasury and investor relations.
- Experience in the medical-device industry is not required, but experience with manufacturing companies is.
- Experience in the review and analysis of operating results and the development and implementation of long and short term financial and strategic plans.
- A track record of improving financial controls, upgrading processes and systems, and of driving operational excellence.

- Ability to prioritize and effectively handle several assignments, often working under tight deadlines while balancing effective delegation and hands-on involvement; ability to work effectively independently and as a team member.
