Title: Head of Platform Architecture

Reporting to the Vice President – Product Development, the Head of Platform Architecture will have the overall responsibility for the creation and convergence of the End-to-end Solution and Platform Architectures for portfolio of projects within specific functional domain. Wiley digital content and assets related to scientific research, educational material and professional learning may be assembled into multiple products and delivered in print and digital format via various channels such as Web, Mobile etc. This person will have overall responsibility and ownership for the solution architecture and associated strategy that drives architecture designs to enable standardization, simplification of application portfolio of the assigned functional domain. These decisions and strategies need to align with specific Wiley standards, including Technology, Information, and Infrastructure and Security standards.
Summary
The Head of Platform Architecture will possess extensive experience in end-to-end platform and solutions architecture, with specific expertise in the content and education industry, including experience with major technology development environments, architecture design and implementation, and large systems integration.
A managerial position responsible for managing Solution Architects and software developers within specific assigned domain/function (such as Product Delivery, Adaptive, Assessments, Courseware, Customer engagement, Back-Office OR Content Creation/Enrichment). Manage and prioritize competing requests from different areas of the businesses such as GE, GR & PD. Manage demand forecasting for solution architects from the assigned portfolio of projects. Manage many different constituents through influence, debate and collaboration (IT, GTS, RM, EPMO, third party service providers.) to align and establish convergence towards target state architecture. Operates within established policies and procedures but adapts departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges.
Responsibilities
- Head of Platform Architecture will be responsible for solution and platform definition & architecture, platform convergence, roadmap of portfolio of related projects.
- Will enable Solutions Architecture organization, with touch points to businesses and technology organizations
- Will develop end-to-end solutions architectures for major Wiley initiatives ensuring alignment with business objectives
- Will ensure alignment to Wiley Technology Roadmap
- Will ensure compliance of major initiatives with Wiley Architecture Governance Process
- Will ensure compliance of solutions with established Wiley standards
- Will ensure standardization, simplification and transformation of the Wiley application portfolio by developing solutions that will progress the Wiley roadmap
- Help foster a culture of technical excellence and innovation across the IT community
- Researches and plans the appropriate technologies and solutions to meet changing business directives
- Lead the architecture reviews for solutions as part of enterprise solution architecture governance and ensure that solution architectures meet business needs
- Manages team of solution architects and provides guidance in the early planning stage around the different solution patterns that may be appropriate for the specific solution
- Ensure all individual solution architecture artifacts, for the assigned portfolio, are documented as per Wiley standard and stored in EA Library
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, engineer or related field is required.
- 15+ years ‘relevant experience with at least 7+ years in a multi-entity, complex, and distributed environment.
- Strong, pragmatic approach to leading architecture and development solutions, with a proven record in Technology strategy planning and delivery.
- Experience with the development, ownership, and successful delivery of an enterprise wide technology architecture plan that has achieved application simplification and standardization.
- Very strong/expert level technology skills and understandings in SOA architecture, EAI – Enterprise application integration, Security SSO, Java/J2EE platform, Oracle, Portal, ESB, BPM and CMS.
- Must have worked with architecture where technology is part of the revenue stream and product offering, and not part of internal systems
- Ability to work individually and build the solutions architecture discipline in Wiley.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and very effective time management skills. Proven ability to influence people indirectly, work with people in multi-functional roles, and success in being a driver of change
- Able to manage towards both short-term goals and long-term goals.
- Strong communications skills: ability to communicate technical information effectively and efficiently to both technical and non‐technical management and staff
- An expert-level technologist and architect with a passion and enthusiasm for technology
