Climate change is one of the most intractable challenges that civilization has ever faced: how to get people to care about climate change and take urgent action to address this existential threat.

Potential Energy Coalition is taking on this challenge by tapping the best minds in marketing, media and creative to change attitudes and beliefs and motivate substantive action on climate change. To do so, we are building an industry-wide marketing capability, driven by insights and supported by a coalition of the very best talent in academia and industry, to launch and support campaigns about this issue.

The Head of Marketing role is essential to the mission and success of Potential Energy. The Head of Marketing and Media will be responsible for developing and executing breakthrough marketing campaigns that change how Americans view and act on the climate crisis. Your role will be to work closely with the Chief Creative Officer to develop creative integrated communications plans, oversee media planning and buying, manage campaign execution, and ensure robust program measurement.

Potential Energy is looking for a right brain/left brain leader who is equal parts creatively and operationally oriented with particular depth in digital, social and analytically driven marketing. You are a strong strategic thinker – with a bias for action. You have the experience to deploy the most advanced marketing approaches, the leadership skills to influence our strategic and creative direction and the curiosity and humility to try and crack one of the hardest and most important marketing problems we will ever face.

Major Responsibilities

Potential Energy is looking for someone who can plan, manage new and highly innovative campaigns, and also build a durable brand and capability for the long term:

  • Develop breakthrough communications strategies. Develop bold new marketing and media strategies that reframe the climate challenge. Understand audiences and design 360° campaigns that engage them through cross-channel communications, PR, events/experiential, social and local grassroots activations.
  • Manage campaign development and execution. Oversee relationship with media agencies focused on audience creation, media planning, media buying, campaign trafficking and in-flight optimization. Partner closely with PR, media, influencer marketing, event, and grassroots organizations to ensure strategic alignment and coordinated execution. Work with analytics lead and partners to develop campaign learning agendas and measure program effectiveness.
  • Build state-of-the-art marketing capabilities. Deploy best-in-class marketing capabilities to develop and execute campaigns across channels. This includes campaign development tools and processes, digital asset management, and integrated campaign reporting tools. Work in partnership with Potential Energy leadership to build relationships with innovators and leading players in the sector to ensure Potential Energy is at the forefront of leading techniques such as audience creation, social amplification, influencer activation, program measurement.
  • Build brands that resonate with consumers. Understand how to build and nurture brands that resonate with consumers. Develop brand identity and voice, and cultivate brands through campaigns, messaging and experiences.

Ideal Skills and Experience

  • Highly energetic and capable marketer, media strategist or comms planner with 10+ years of experience. A background in consumer marketing or social advocacy is particularly desirable.
  • Experience across a broad range of marketing functional roles, including “big idea” brand building, integrated 360° communications, media planning and buying, audience targeting, research and program measurement and optimization.
  • Significant executional experience with digital and social marketing. Experience with data-driven targeting, digital media planning and buying, digital execution and program measurement. Social media experience including social content development, influencer activation and social listening.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
