SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Head of Global Environmental, Health and Safety will report directly to the Chief Legal Officer of Whirlpool and provide global leadership for the Environmental, Health and Safety strategy and operational improvement for the global enterprise. This includes stewardship of the Sustainability initiatives. This individual will work collaboratively across regions and business units to lead the company’s strategy and plans to achieve world class EHS performance. This position will also be responsible for the development and management of all regulatory programs to ensure maximum compliance.


Global responsibility, directly impacts approximately 100,000 employees. Provides direct Environmental, Health and Safety leadership in manufacturing operations in all plants and manufacturing facilities across the globe. Safety leadership will also be provided in numerous field operations as well as offices, warehouses and other company facilities worldwide.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES


Lead and direct all environmental, sustainability, health and safety related activities for the organization globally. This includes related areas such as disaster/fire/prevention, ergonomics, workers’ compensation claims management, air and noise monitoring, radiation safety, laser safety, ventilation, etc.


  • Provide effective team leadership to each business and global region on achieving world-class performance related to environmental, health and safety, coordinating all interaction with outside EHS resources in conjunction with current policies and regulations.


  • Actively promote and closely monitor the company’s Line-Driven Safety Process


  • Provide EHS consultation and information to support all company EHS efforts. Work cooperatively with all levels of management staff on all safety related issues as they impact other company functions.


  • Lead implementation of all EHS programs. This includes updating existing and developing new programs as needed due to regulatory changes, changes in company policies.


  • Monitor EHS metrics, including incident rates, energy consumption, waste generation, and provide management with feedback.


  • Develop and implement enterprise policies involving safety, health and environmental matters.


  • Provide EHS consultation and support related to the company’s commitment to world-class sustainability performance. Work with the Sustainability Strategy group and to champion, develop and implement enterprise policies and improvements.


  • Lead and direct all legislative and regulatory compliance related matters. This includes developing and implementing a strategy for routinely auditing all facilities in order to ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory and corporate safety and health standards; and educate management during the process.


  • Constantly monitor and analyze laws and regulations for change (in multiple states and countries) and revise corporate procedures or provide direction accordingly.


  • Implement and oversee an aggressive workers’ compensation (WC) claims management process. Develop related policies and procedures. Educate new claims personnel and audit performance. Monitor and assist in changing state WC laws.


  • Direct the management of facility EHS leads on environmental programs in the areas of pollution abatement, environmental and waste water management.


  • Build cross-functional relationships with key departments to foster support for continual safety improvement.


  • Lead EHS sector directors to ensure proactive EHS engagement on all projects assigned to


  • Be the liaison for the Group’s safety and disaster prevention Initiatives, providing routine reporting on injury and fire incidents, and quarterly reports. Assist with issues including auditing locations, training and education of personnel, and technical support in all areas of health, safety and disaster prevention.


BACKGROUND REQUIRED

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ‘world-class’ skills and leadership in an EHS role with a focus on safety in a diversified industrial environment. He or she must have strong skills in strategy, effective program and process execution, organizational capability, change management and business partnership.


  • Minimum 15 years Environmental Health Safety experience with at least five or more years experience in an enterprise-wide leadership or supervisory capacity.


  • Excellent knowledge of Manufacturing and Field Operations.


  • Creation and implementation of a Sustainability program.


  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulatory requirements, industry trends, and ability to work effectively in a globally-matrixed organization/team environment.


  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills in the global environment.


  • Proven ability to effectively work with all levels and different global cultural types of an organization.


  • Proven ability to influence and lead without authority.


  • Bachelor’s degree in safety engineering or related discipline preferred Masters in a related discipline.


ACCOUNTABILITIES / MAJOR CHALLENGES:


  • Raising enterprise awareness and knowledge of the importance of risk management and focus on EHS.


  • Leading a continuous improvement initiative to embed EHS as a core component of the Company’s culture, and as central to the way they conduct business.


  • Establish appropriate metrics and report metrics at the enterprise level.


  • Work with EHS Corporate to set Safety strategy, goals and objectives superb technical knowledge and communication skills are of extreme importance as this role acts as the company “expert” in all matters safety, and in many cases, will be the face of the company for issues that arise. This is a highly visible position both inside and outside the company which will interact with all levels of executive, staff, line management, and hourly teammates as well as outside agencies.


  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the company from the CEO, COO, Chairman, Presidents Vice Presidents, plant managers, hourly teammates, and union officials.


EDUCATION REQUIRED

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Risk Management, Safety Engineering, or Safety Management is preferred.


COMPENSATION

The compensation package will be designed to attract the outstanding individual sought for this key position. In addition to a highly competitive salary and bonus, this executive will be incentivized to increase shareholder value, and offered an opportunity to invest in the business.


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Considerable travel is required including facility audits, interaction with regulatory agencies, incident investigations, union negotiations and issues, legal assistance including testimony and activities related to trade and professional organizations.
