Field Operations Manager
Position: Full time

Location: Southwest Virginia or Western North Carolina areas


Position Summary:

Branch Civil, Inc. is in search of a Field Operations Manager to join our well established and growing company. The Field Operations Manager is responsible for the general oversight of all field crews within their assigned region. The Field Operations Manager is also charged with region-wide scheduling of resources (equipment and manpower) to maximize utilization amongst all projects within the region. This individual must also guide and direct field supervision in best practices, and hold the same accountable for following production management procedures to meet or exceed established project goals.


Essential Functions:

  • Ensures Operations complies with the contract documents.
  • In concert with the project team and prior to beginning work, develops operational plans for each new project and ensures effective communication to all employees.
  • Monitors project to ensure construction is in accordance with operational plans. When changes or revisions are necessary, mentors and coaches project team on needed actions.
  • Monitors field production to ensure production rates are being achieved. Where shortfalls exist, works with the project team to achieve the desired production.
  • Keeps work in process to a minimum and embraces the concept of Done, Done, Done.
  • Recruits and hires superintendents and foremen; monitors and supervises hiring of operators and other field personnel. Monitors out of town expenses and helps recruit and train people local to projects.
  • Identifies and assigns key personnel to allow flexibility in bidding. Supplies periodic reports to estimating showing resource availability by geographic area and job type.
  • Evaluates developmental needs of field personnel and promotes effective training for superintendents, foremen, and hourly craft employees.
  • Participates in annual performance evaluations that objectively evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of field supervisory employees and provides the meaningful feedback for development.
  • During market downturns, develops and implements a strategy to reduce costs while retaining our most productive and capable field employees.
  • Monitors equipment utilization and deploys equipment where it will provide the most economic benefit to the company. Where underutilization is observed, directs the removal of equipment to lower project expenses.
  • In concert with Equipment Operations, authorizes outside rentals to ensure excessive rentals do not impact profitability.
  • Assists Equipment Operations with asset management recommendations.
  • Monitors progress of project as it relates to schedule and if project is not on schedule works with project team to reestablish timely delivery.
  • Identifies effective means and methods to continually improve productivity and lower costs.
  • Investigates and takes corrective action in areas of indicated or potential overruns.
  • Supplies feedback to estimating informing them about actual crew size and production rates.
  • Reviews job projections with project team to ensure estimated goals are being met or exceeded. Helps project team identify slippages / variances and assists team in resolving problems.
  • Ensures that quality standards are met on every project, identifies recurrent quality issues and develops methods to eliminate those issues in the future.
  • Vigorously communicates, supports, and enforces corporate safety efforts. Cooperates with Corporate Safety managers to ensure OSHA compliance at jobsites.
  • Proactively reviews project sites for safe working conditions.
  • Conveys to field supervisory personnel how their work contributes to overall organizational goals and objectives.

Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and a minimum of 10 years related construction industry experience in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of standards, specifications, codes, regulations and laws and DOT standards and rules.
  • Able to read contract documents and plans, has a fundamental knowledge of contract law.
  • Understands fundamental layout and surveying.
  • Understands earth and rock types and what they require relative to excavation needs.
  • Understands scheduling methods and concepts.
  • Good communication skills; both oral or written.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations.

Travel
The position requires frequent travel within region and overnight lodging.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Immediate reports include the following positions: Superintendents


Work Environment

Individual works mobile within their region traveling between project locations. Minimal time spent in regional office.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time salaried position which will typically involve 40 plus hours a week, with frequent early starts and late quits as needed to meet critical deadlines.
