Job Summary

This position serves as the lead administrator for UT Southwestern’s neuroscience service line and the lead administrator of the O’Donnell Brain Institute. The O’Donnell Brain Institute (OBI) serves as the focal point for the coordination of neuroscience clinical care and research across UT Southwestern and its affiliated organizations. The OBI is composed of over 380 faculty and more than 2,000 staff. As an academic service line, OBI works in collaboration with the following departments/divisions: Neurology, Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR), Psychiatry, Pediatric Neurology, Neuroradiology, Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Disease, and Neurosciences. This position will work under the direction of the Director of the O’Donnell Brain Institute and in coordination with the Department Chairs, Health System and University leadership.
Experience and Education

Master’s degree in related field and eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in healthcare, business, and/or university environment.


Job Duties

Strategic Planning and Business Development
  • Formulate and gain approval for strategic business plans and objectives consistent with UTSW’s mission, goals, and strategies
  • Ensure the strategic planning and departmental and hospital operational budgeting processes are linked. Maintain and monitor service line business and strategic plans in coordination with the University and Health System leadership.
  • Together with the OBI Director and Associate Director of Clinical Sciences, develop new and enhance existing inpatient and outpatient clinical programs and services to achieve growth opportunities commensurate with available capacity.
  • Facilitate contractual relationships between related organizations and Division hospitals.
  • Together with the Office of Institutional Advancement, establish marketing programs that enhance the awareness, reputation and preference for basic and clinical neuroscience programs at UTSW.

Hospital and Clinic Operations
  • Provide executive leadership, collaborating with the Health System, with all areas of within the Neuroscience Service Line and Access Center
  • Directs leadership of O’Donnell Brain Institute to manage the operations and administration of the multi-disciplinary Spine Center and Neurocritical Care program.
  • In collaboration with Department and Hospital leadership, partners to support leadership on clinic operations in Neurosurgery, Neurology, PMR, Psychiatry, and Sleep and Breathing Disorders Clinics

Research & Academic Administration
  • Direct administration of the research enterprise within the institute; direct grant administration, recommend and develop new grant funding and support the preparation of major research proposals from a financial and administrative perspective.
  • Support and partner with the Chief Operating Officer for Academic Affairs on School of Medicine goals and other administrative and financial issues.
  • Oversee the administrative component of the promotion and tenure and faculty appointment process and ensure the institute is following the appropriate policies working in partnership with the School of Medicine Dean’s Office.
  • Develop programs and standards of performance to continually measure and evaluate safety, service and quality improvement; monitor standards through the implementation of training, allocation of resources and application of corrective actions as necessary.
  • Provide administrative direction to the educational programs of the institute under the direction of the Institute Director; supervise appropriate staff and provide coordination and oversight of educational functions.
  • Provide administrative direction to the research support of the institute; in collaboration with the Institute Director, ensure compliance with institutional guidelines and state and federal laws.
  • Work with the Dean’s office related to CME programming, symposiums and conferences in the related departments.
  • Oversee the financial and operational activities of the O’Donnell Neuroscience Translational Research Center.
  • Work with the Institute Director on translational or scientific projects as assigned.
  • Represent the Institute Director in his or her absence on administrative and fiscal matters.

Retention and Recruitment
  • Work with departments and clinics to improve retention rates among faculty and staff
  • Partner with Department Chairs and institutional leadership to identify top faculty talent and support recruitment efforts

O’Donnell Brain Institute Administrative Structure
  • Position will provide oversight to the administrative leadership of the O’Donnell Brain Institute in clinical, research, educational and administrative areas
  • Oversee the website maintenance and improvements consistent with departmental and health system goals
  • Oversee the publication of O’Donnell newsletter, updates, and Institute communications regarding broad initiatives
  • Oversee the development of marketing and development materials related to the Institute
  • Work with marketing to ensure strategic efforts that are accurate and timely related to ongoing programmatic investments and priority programs
  • Work with marketing to develop a UTSW Neurosciences brand identity
