Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

Under limited supervision and reporting to the interim Chief Development Officer, the Assistant Vice President for Health Sciences Development ( AVP ) will be responsible for the execution, management and oversight for fundraising priorities for all health-related schools and colleges. The AVP will build a prospect portfolio and solicit major and principal gifts in support of those priorities. Responsibilities include the management of professional and administrative development staff in planning, implementing, coordinating and administering comprehensive development programs with an emphasis on major gifts. Works with deans, department chairs, faculty, alumni and volunteers in fundraising efforts to secure major gifts. This position also serves on the USC Development Leadership Team.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 7 years of major gifts experience with emphasis on health-related or science focused schools/colleges with supervisory experience. This position is required to travel, work evenings and weekends. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of major gifts related development experience, preferably in higher education and health related schools/colleges. Graduate degree is an advantage. Prior experience in working in a complex development model is helpful. Have effective computer experience including database operation and word processing.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of principles and methods of planning and conducting diverse fundraising programs. Development experience in higher education and/or hybrid development model. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with faculty, alumni, donors, volunteers, businesses and the general public. Outstanding oral, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to travel, work evenings and weekends, as required. Strong track record of visiting, qualifying and cultivating major donors toward gifts of $25K – $1M. Prior experience in executing strategic donor events hosted by leadership/faculty for a select set of donor prospects. Supervisory experience in hiring, managing, training and mentoring development directors and administrative staff is required. Must have a valid driver’s license.
