Student Activities, a unit of the Student Venues and Engagement department within Student Affairs at UNC Charlotte, creates student learning and development opportunities that inspire campus involvement and civic engagement.
Venture is an experientially based outdoor education program modeled after Outward Bound. The department provides weekend wilderness trips, academic courses in outdoor adventure activities, and structured team building and leadership development programs for students, faculty, staff and community. The purpose of Venture is to help individuals form deeper connections with themselves, others, and the natural environment through meaningful and challenging activity-based involvement that promotes personal development.
The Assistant Director for Challenge Course and Team Building is responsible for providing exemplary outdoor experiential learning and development opportunities for the UNC Charlotte community and external clients with primary responsibility for managing the Challenge Course program; facilities and equipment; recruitment, training, retention and supervision of Challenge Course program facilitators and course managers; scheduling and contracting with clients; and serving as a Challenge Course program facilitator as appropriate. The Assistant Director teaches academic classes as assigned.
- The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Director for Challenge Course and Teambuilding include:
- Provide leadership for, manage and administer all aspects of challenge course based team building programs .
- Recruit, train, and supervise staff for challenge course and mobile team building programs.
- Provide leadership for and management of challenge course and mobile team building facilities and equipment.
- Teach in the Kinesiology Outdoor Adventure Leadership minor program and provide field instruction as assigned.
- Provide support for the unit including administrative oversight, strategic planning, assessment, budget management, and serving as the primary resource regarding best practices and industry standards relating to challenge course and team building programs
- A Masterâs Degree in Education, Recreation, Student Personnel and Guidance or related field.
- Excellent organization skills including development of workflow and communication systems, delegation, and follow-up.
- A minimum of three years of experience in the profession with an appropriate balance of program development, field and classroom instruction, supervisory skills and/or administrative experience.
- Demonstrated skills facilitating low and high challenge course programs and team building exercises
- Detailed understanding of industry standards and best practices in challenge course programming and coordination of inspection and maintenance.
- Willingness and flexibility to work with students and staff in unstructured situations including evening and weekend work.
- Commitment to the pursuit of challenge course programming as a tool for education, leadership development and identity/character formation.
- Detailed understanding of Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) standards
- Challenge Course construction and/or inspection
- Understanding of wilderness adventure education programs and trip leading
- First Aid and CPR
- Wilderness First Responder
- First Aid/CPR Instructor
- Certifications with ACCT
